If you’re choosing a new hot water system in Perth right now, you’ve got more options than ever — and more conflicting advice than ever to go with them. Gas is being phased out in some states. Heat pumps are being heavily promoted. Electric storage is what most people have but few people want to keep. Solar systems are ageing out across the suburbs.

This guide cuts through it. No brand recommendations, no agenda — just a straightforward comparison of the main system types for Perth homeowners in 2026, written by a licensed plumber who installs all of them.

The four main options for Perth homes

Before comparing them, it’s worth understanding what each system actually does.

Electric storage heats water using an element inside a tank and keeps it hot until you need it. It’s simple, widely available, and inexpensive to purchase and install. The downside is running cost — it’s the most expensive system to operate, and Perth’s hard water accelerates element and tank deterioration if the system isn’t serviced regularly.

Gas storage works the same way as electric storage but uses natural gas to heat the water. Faster recovery time, lower running costs than electric, and familiar to most Perth households. Requires a natural gas connection — not all properties have one.

Gas instantaneous, also called continuous flow, heats water on demand rather than storing it. No tank, no standby heat loss, endless hot water. Well suited to renovated homes and larger households. The honest answer is that it depends on your property, your household, and your priorities. But here is a straightforward way to think about it.

If you’re on natural gas and replacing an existing gas system, staying on gas — storage or instantaneous — is a reasonable, cost-effective choice. Instantaneous is worth the additional upfront cost if your household uses a lot of hot water or you’re renovating anyway.

If you’re not on natural gas, a heat pump is the strongest all-round recommendation for most Perth households in 2026. The running cost savings are real, the rebate reduces the upfront gap, and Perth’s climate is well suited to heat pump operation year-round.

If upfront cost is the overriding constraint and your property is on gas, gas storage is a practical, lower-cost option that will serve you well with regular servicing.

Electric storage is rarely the best choice for a new installation in 2026 unless specific circumstances make the alternatives impractical. The running cost gap is too significant over a system’s lifespan to ignore.
